ONION: Gladalan

  • Developed in the 1920s at the Gladalan nursery in Armadale, Western Australia, by Glad and Alan Brown.
  • Appearance: Produces medium to large, globe-shaped bulbs up to 15cm in diameter with a shiny, straw-brown papery skin and white, crisp flesh.
  • Flavor: Mild, rich flavour suitable for cooking, including roasting, frying, and stews.
  • Variety Type: Short to medium-day variety, making it exceptionally well-suited to warmer climates, including Australian subtropical regions, but adaptable elsewhere
  • When to Sow: In Australia, sowing typically occurs in Autumn (April to June) to ensure bulb development before hot weather.
  • Harvest Time: Approximately 15–18 weeks (110–130 days) after sowing, or when the tops turn yellow and droop.
  • Germination: Takes 7–14 days, with best results at 19-21°C.
