Klipp Dagga Lion's tail Leonotis leonurus

Also called lion's ear, is a tall, tropical orange flowering shrub. Rich in nectar, great for pollinators.

Planting: Seeds can be sown directly into the garden in spring.

  • Conditions: Requires full sun for best growth and flowering.
  • Soil: They are not very fussy, but adding compost helps, particularly if the soil is poor.
  • Watering: Young plants need regular watering. Once established, they are highly drought-tolerant, but a deep watering in summer will encourage more growth.
  • Spacing: These plants grow tall and quite fast, so allow 1m – 1.5m space between them
  • Maintenance:
    • Mulch: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weed
    • Pruning: After flowering, prune them hard (around knee height) in late winter or early spring to encourage new, bushy growth..
  • Harvesting Seeds: Wait until the spiky flower heads are brown and mostly dry. Snip the stalks and shake out the seeds.
