Grown as a tender, warm-season vegetable, it thrives in warm to hot conditions. It is frost-sensitive and should be planted after the danger of frost has passed.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, ideally amended with organic compost or rotted manure.
- Sunlight: Requires full, direct sunlight for the best growth.
- Watering: Thrives on regular moisture (roughly one inch per week), but is prone to fungal diseases, so water at the base of the plant in the morning
- Seeds can be planted directly in the soil in late spring or early summer. It is often recommended to soak seeds for 24 hours before planting to improve germination.
- Spacing: Seeds should be placed 60–90 cmapart along a row.
- Trellising: Due to its vigorous, climbing nature, growing them on a fence, pergola, or trellis is highly recommended to save space and keep the fruit straight.
